Best Locations in the High Country for a Photoshoot

Engagement Portraits, Family PortraitsCynthia Viola
Because in the end you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb the Mountain.
— Jack Kerouac

Beacon Heights (Parkway mile 305.2) 30-45 min Roundtrip hike, No restrooms

Whether you’re here for a family session, engagement session, as a graduating senior, surprise proposal, extended family, anniversary or you’d like head shots, there are several things to consider in your photography location. If you’re here on vacation to see the mountains, you’ll likely want to incorporate those in the background, but not all locations have easy access. If you live here and see the mountains every day, maybe you’d be more into a waterfall, also a more difficult access. If you’ve got 30 people to organize and at least half of them are not into the idea of shooting at all, maybe the driveway at your rental cabin will be just fine so long as everyone shows up. Whatever your situation, I’m happy to help you navigate what’s best for you.

Moses Cone Memorial Park (Parkway mile 294) No hike, Paved Sidewalks, Restrooms.

Time of day

I will forever be an advocate for Golden Hour. That can be first 90 minutes of the day after the sun rises, or the last 90 before it sets. In the best conditions on a perfect day, you cannot beat light which is flattering in every way possible. Blue hour just before/after can also add a unique light to your images. If the sky is cloudy, really any time of day will look about the same, so we can be flexible if it’s calling for rain at a certain time. That said, our schedules don’t always align to make this time possible. If that’s the case I’ll help you navigate a location in the best lighting possible. Capturing the moment is more important than the light or the location.

Rough Ridge (Parkway Mile 302.8) 45-60 min Roundtrip Hike, No restrooms

Tourists/Parking

Many of the more popular locations such as Rough Ridge above are EXTREMELY crowded in the fall, on weekends and at sunset. As such I will always advise against these locations during these times. If you’re open to a different time of year/week and open to sunrise, we can certainly try it then.

Season

Depending on the time of year the sun will rise and set at drastically different times. I will help you plan accordingly. If you’d like snow, that is definitely possible, but only about 5-10 days out of the year. You have to be on my waiting list and ready to shoot usually within 24 hours notice. Sometimes the forecast is accurate, sometimes we get rain or sleet and have to reschedule. We both have to be super flexible.

Various Locations Downtown Banner Elk.

The age/size of your crew

If this is an engagement session, the sky is the limit. If we’re talking 30 people of all generations, shapes and sizes, I will happily advise you on the locations that will accommodate you best. Moses Cone and the various town parks tend to be best if your home is not well suited. You will know your crew better than me though, if everyone is down for a hike, like Roan Mountain below, you know I am.

Roan Mountain, Carver’s Gap. Tennessee Border. As little as 5 min, as much as the entire Appalachian Trail. Restrooms.

Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure
— Bob Bitchin

Not everything will go perfectly… and that’s perfectly fine. If it rains we will adapt. If you’re running behind, don’t let it ruin your day, I'm so easy going, I’m happy to get work done on my phone while I wait. If the dress doesn’t fit perfectly, maybe send me a quick photo of what’s wrong with it before you switch outfits, chances are I can fix it in photoshop. All that to say, if you just show up, as you are, willing to have a new experience, we will have a great time and make some memories no matter the circumstances. But if you show up stressed out, with various expectations of exactly how everything will play out… chances are you will be disappointed.

Below we have 5 different surprise proposals at Grandfather Mountain (and a wedding). The winds at the wedding were so strong, her dress blew over her head three times. We all just laughed it off and kept shooting and they have a ton of fun blooper photos. Three of the summer couples made it to Calloway Peak for their wedding proposal as intended, no problems. The other two autumn/spring couples had hoped to hike the peak but got major fog, rain or ice that day and we had to stick to the bridge for safety. All turned out beautifully of course and she still said yes ;)

So let’s just agree to show up as our most authentic selves and see what kind of adventure we can have. :)

Grandfather Mountain Bridge + Ladders Trail to McRae Peak. 5min to Bridge. 45-60min each way to peak. Restrooms. $30 admission.

Below are a few other popular locations for a photoshoot in Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and elsewhere in the High Country.

Watauga Lake. Just over the Tennessee border. Several inputs with restrooms. BYO Canoe.

Flat Rock (Parkway Mile 308.3) Further south, but usually far less crowded. 30min round trip hike. No restrooms.

Otter Falls in Seven Devils. 45-60 min round trip hike, pretty steep. No restrooms.

Brown Mountain Beach Resort. Lenoir. Appointment only. Minimal hiking. Restrooms on site. (You should totally stay in one of their YURTS!)

Arborcrest Gardens. Downtown Boone. Appointment Only. As little as 5min walking, as much as 90, pending preference. Restrooms.

McRae Meadows at the base of Grandfather Mountain. No hike. No restrooms.

An unnamed field at the top of Beech Mountain Near the Pinnacle Inn. No hike. No restrooms. Parking for only 2-3 cars.

The Mill Pond in Downtown Banner Elk. No hike, just walking over these rocks. No restrooms.

The Blowing Rock. Paved sidewalks, no hike. Restrooms. $9 admission.

Mountain Magic Resort. LOTS of fun options here, but you need to rent one of their Airbnbs for the night. Totally worth it.

Hawksbill. 2-3 hour roundtrip. 4x4 needed to get to trailhead. Portapotty at trailhead. Parking for less than 10 cars.

If you’d like tips on other hikes in the High Country Area just let me know! I am familiar with most of them, just may not have captured a photoshoot there.

Compression falls in the iphone photo below, for example, is one of the most difficult short hikes in the area, requiring ropes to climb the very steep bank down, but the epic waterfall is worth it. You’d just have to change clothes and dry off all the sweat and mud after the hike before photos. So you might be better off just bringing your bathing suit and cooler and enjoying the day. Save the photoshoot for another time. (no restrooms there btw)

Counter Clockwise: Laurel Fork Falls, Tennessee. 60-90min round trip. No restrooms. Very steep. Crab Orchard Falls Valle Crucis. 45-60min round trip. No restrooms. Compression Falls 60-90min round trip. No restrooms. Very steep with ropes. 4x4 recommended for parking. No restrooms.

This local girl loves each and every location up here and I’ll be happy to guide you to any of them. (or experience them for the first time with you if you’ve found something new to me!) You can contact me here, or find me on instagram at @cynthiajviola.

Mindy and Oliver's Wedding at Appalachian View

Wedding PhotographyCynthia Viola

I had so much fun getting to know these two cuties as we ventured around Charlotte for their engagement session. We started at Wooden Robot Brewery, where it all started for them, and casually strolled around to some of the popular spots like the Hearts Wall and anywhere we could squeeze in the Charlotte City Scape.

Fast forward to the wedding weekend, I joined them for a group hike with all their friends and family along the Tanawa Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was such a fun way for all their guests to get to know each other before the big day, I highly recommend for all my adventurous babes!

For the rehearsal dinner Mindy wore her grandmother/mother’s wedding gown which she had modernized, so we made sure to create a few portraits with it the morning of the wedding. With the remaining lace from the dress she made a brooch for her mother and pocket squares for her brother and dad. Her mother also hand painted all the wedding invitations and she wore her grandmother’s bracelet.

For their wedding party they wanted only the best dogs they knew, Lexie and Frankie, who of course had joined us on the big hike the day before as well. They were certainly a crowd favorite :)

At the reception they incorporated teal glass insulators and money tree seed pods onto the table design. These were to honor her grandfather who was a line man electrician and also loved money trees. He had collected them both through the years and they were perfect for the reception tables.

In addition to their other fun reception festivities, they chose to do an Hora Loca with their friends and family. “The Crazy Hour” it is essentially a party within a party and everyone had a blast. Fun lights and hats and masks, it definitely adds another element to the day.

You guys we had SO much fun celebrating with you! Let’s do it again soon!

Trash the Dress Shoot at Brown Mountain Beach Resort

Wedding PhotographyCynthia Viola
The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for a newer and richer experience
— Eleanor Roosevelt

If you have followed me for any amount of time, you know trash the dress photography is my all time favorite type of shoot. The wild abandon of breaking the “rules.” The sheer joy that comes with splashing water on your love when you’re “not supposed to.” The simple fact that you get authentic memories of a moment that wasn’t buried in tradition and expectation, but wild and free, just like your new love.

Katie and Dan wanted those moments too and with as much fun as we had on their adventurous engagement session at Otter Falls, we knew we made a great team.

Of course Brown Mountain Beach was the perfect venue for capturing everything they were looking for. They wanted to include their best girl Kimura, ride off on their motorcycle, hop in the canoe, and of course, jump in the icy mountain water! I couldn’t have dreamed up a more perfect shoot if I wanted to!

While perfect photos in a proper, clean dress and suit certainly hold value and help you remember your wedding day, you cannot deny that you could ever forget holding onto your train so it didn’t get caught in the engine as you road away on a motorcycle, or dying laughing as your splashed your love and danced in an icy mountain river barefooted as the sun set in the background.

There are days that need to be remembered, and then there are memorable days. And I submit that the spontaneous moments that catch us by surprise in between the planned ones, are the ones that will never leave us.

I’m ready for your next adventure whenever you are.

Kayla and Connor's Sky Retreat Wedding

Wedding at Sky Retreat NC

These sweet babes have waited quite some time for this big day! With all of the postponements last year Kayla and Connor were not spared. But everyone showed up ready to celebrate with them!

They were able to utilize the many talents of their family to make the wedding a success, their mothers helped with all the planning, her cousin was the officiant, his aunt baked the cake, her mom made all the toffee favors and of course she wore several beautiful legacy items as well. She wore her great grandmother's pearls, as well as a garter made from Grandmother's wedding dress. It’s so beautiful when couples can tie in their families legacies and traditions.

Their sweet pup Georgia was especially happy for them (and the fact that she got lots of extra attention). She did so great during the ceremony and portraits.

I have been dying to shoot at Sky Retreat! Just look at this view… I was not disappointed. And did you know they also offer hang gliding lessons!! I am SO there as soon as season slows down!

Oh my goodness, if anyone stole the show this weekend besides the happy couple, it was definitely Kayla’s Grandpa! He carried around a photo of his late bride and was filled with emotion all day…which of course got everyone else teary-eyed as well. He and Kayla have such a good relationship though, they also shared a special dance.

Kate and Michal's Wedding at The Lodge on Brier Creek

Lodge on Brier Creek Wedding

It’s evident immediately after meeting Katherine and Michal that Christ is at the center of their relationship. In their words for sure, but more importantly in their actions. It’s no wonder they are both in Physical Therapy careers because they are both so kind and filled with grace.

On their engagement shoot they talked about how they’d met in undergrad, experienced a mud run together and how they knew from the very beginning something was different about “this one.” As friends and family shared stories all weekend it was clear they were not only well loved by each other, but by every person in attendance. Grandparents spoke of their kindness, college friends spoke of their presence and willingness to help, parents all spoke of how they feel blessed they’ll be gaining a new son or daughter. It was truly a beautiful weekend surrounded by love, rolling hills and a million cicadas singing their approval.

Camping themed rehearsal dinner

I don’t typically post rehearsal photos, but how cute is this camping themed rehearsal?!? S’mores are my love language so you know I was obsessed. I mean really, mini flashlight favors, marshmallow trees….and the Mario groom’s cake!

The quiet moment with mom as she helped her dressed was one of the most special moments of the day. The gravity of it all hit them both and they were simply grateful. Dad too was overwhelmed and they shared a prayer over her.

Lodge on Brier Creek Wedding

First looks with grandma and the bridal party were also special and filled with joy and love.

They decided to do a blindfolded first look with each other but quickly decided it was better to just be present (with closed eyes) instead. Everyone backed away and gave them space to share a prayer and encouragement to each other.

At the rehearsal we had a hard time deciding which direction to point the ceremony, the top of the knoll at Lodge at Brier Creek was gorgeous in every direction!

They chose to share communion together as their first act, followed by having their parents lay hands and pray over them. It was all so incredibly beautiful.

Laura and David's Wedding at Mount Airy Farm

Wedding PhotographyCynthia Viola
Mount Airy Farm Wedding in Asheville

I met Laura and David originally at Landon and Alexa’s wedding a couple years ago, and got to hang out with them again at at Kristin and Matt’s wedding earlier this year. It was only natural by the time their wedding rolled around that we’d be staying in the same house, drinking bourbon at 1am and relaxing in the jacuzzi after a long, beautiful and successful wedding day.

They chose the most amazing little farm house in Asheville to host not only their wedding but several of their friends and family during the week leading up to the big day. With so many people coming together to celebrate them, it was only right to spend several days together rather than just a few hours. This was a weekend that will live on for years to come.

Her engagement ring is David’s great grandmothers ring and her wedding ring has diamonds from her grandmother’s engagement ring. His wedding ring is Laura’s grandmother’s engagement and wedding bands welded together and the original engravings are still in tact. How incredible is that bit of legacy?!? I love it when couples are about to entwine their histories together like that.

It poured rain the whole night before the wedding and morning of. We had already moved the ceremony out of the field in front of the house and were worried we would have to move it indoors entirely, but just an hour before the ceremony started, the clouds broke and we were able to enjoy the rest of the evening dry and carefree! It was amazing!

Several of the weekends details were DIY from the many hands who came together to make it happen for them. Buckets and buckets of loose flowers were brought in and we spent hours setting them up in every different possible crevice of the house. Matt and Justin brewed a craft beer just for the wedding, Laura made her own veil, Kristin brought tons of details from their wedding to add to the mix, several friends pitched in to make all the meals in between set up and tear down and of course Alexa pulled it all together into a seamless piece of art. It was such an incredible weekend.

I could not be more excited for two people on their wedding day! I have had the pleasure of watching Jess and Zak grow more and more in love from the day they met until today. From long chats while horse back riding with Jess, to scheming the surprise proposal with Zak, capturing their engagements on Roan Mountain and finally as they said I do, I have listened as they both spoke so fondly of each other and jumped with excitement as they celebrated.

They celebrated at Beacon Butcher Bar in Boone as it’s one of their favorite restaurants and it suited them just perfectly from the incredible spread Beacon provided down to every detail Molly created to help remember the day.

We were worried the cold weather was going to make all the photos a challenge, but the sun came out just in time and bathed them in the most perfect sunset glow as they explored the waterfall on the premises. Little Colt might have had more fun than anyone throughout the day though, naming his favorite succulents, dancing with mom and drinking Shirley Temples. It was a perfect day indeed.

Tatiana and Blin's Wedding at Sunnyside Farm

I have found the one whom my soul loves
— Song of Solomon 3:4

It’s always fun when a couple chooses a date that is unique or matters to them in some way, I love that these two chose Pi day for theirs! 3.14 They even had tiny (quarter-sized) pies provided for each of their guests to celebrate!

Tatiana and Blin invited their families to join them at a beautiful vacation home here in the mountains and celebrated their ceremony together in the living room. Every single person was so incredibly gracious and kind to each other and the other vendors as we set up and prepared to shower these two in love. It’s always so wonderful to watch everyone come together as a team to make something beautiful happen. Of course Magan with The Elegant Event led the charge and everything flowed flawlessly.

Both Blin and Tatiana are so very generous and sweet, they had surprise gifts and letters for each other and their crew and couldn’t wait to see their reaction! Watches, jewelry, headphones…they knew exactly what to give.

All day Tatiana had the BIGGEST smile on her face. Whether it was beaming at her groom, saying thank you to her family or simply taking in the wonder of the day she was filled with kind words and grand smiles.

Their first look was so sweet. They wanted to wait until the ceremony to share their first kiss so we had a lot of fun with eskimo kisses instead!

It’s rare I come across something at a wedding I haven’t seen before, but these two decided to have a tree planting ceremony! Instead of pouring sand into a jar or lighting candles, they poured soil and water into their first little tree which they are so excited to care for. Blin’s childhood pastor, Simon, flew in from California to perform the ceremony for them, he also guided them through their premarital counseling. You could tell he was very special to them.

Since it was a rather gray and overcast day we knew we weren’t going to get that beautiful golden glow the sunset typically offers so we played around a bit with some Christmas lights and off camera flash to get the look instead :)

Lake James Wedding | Rachel and Brandon

When you trust someone, you don’t need to know everything.
— Bob Goff
Asheville Wedding Photography

Once Brandon and Rachel decided they wanted to be married, they wasted no time making it happen. A quick six week engagement was plenty to make all the necessary plans, get the families on board and say their I Do’s. Apparently the actual proposal was almost an accident as they chatted over face time, but once it was decided they knew they’d made the right choice and moved forward full of excitement.

It was evident to them both from the first day they met that God was at the center of each persons’ life, and that qualifier was the most important to each of them. The fact that they both loved Crossfit and dancing among other things were simply bonuses.

You know you’re working with the most chill family in the world when they take time to play spoons before the ceremony. Everyone had the very best time, you could hear the laughter over the torrential downpour happening outside and it was wonderful.

We had to sneak in a quick first look with dad just after the first look with Brandon. He was so kind to blow all the leaves away from the shooting area to make the photos better.
